International Year of Biodiversity is an opportunity for all the world to recognize the importance of biodiversity for all life on Earth, to reflect on our a achievements to safeguard biodiversity and focus on the urgency of our challenge for the future. Now is the time to act. This year’s theme was meaning full under this context – “Many Species. One Planet. One Future”.
The International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) is a year-long celebration of biological diversity and its value for life on Earth, taking place around the world in 2010. Coinciding with the date of the 2010 Biodiversity Target, the year was declared by the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2006. World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
Commemorated yearly on 5 June, World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. From our part as a youth, we had a small initiative to aware native peoples about the importance of the day. Through a bicycle ride of 10 riders from Kewkradong Bangladesh, countries adventurer based activist youth group wearing a play card on our bike and special designed outfits from UNDP on the occasion of WED 2010 attracted general people’s attention.
Why is this ride? Question was obvious from the crowd while the rider’s age group was ranges from of plus 50 to below 10 years of age. So, as a way of communication, it was pretty strategic and effective to inject the fact about WED. More over following low speed roads of Dhaka gave us a chance to talk and created an opportunity to eyeing on us.
As a rider, we are happy to be a part of the continued campaign happening all over the globe. It was 100% green initiative while the whole campaign was undertaken by push bike in the city of Dhaka.
