On September 21, the International Coastal Cleanup Day 2013 was observed in the country. Banglalink, a leading mobile phone operator sponsored the event for the seventh consecutive year. The day unfolded in Cox’s Bazar, home of the world’s longest unbroken sea beach – starting off with a rally to raise awareness and instil the spirit of participation, beach cleaning and awareness generation among tourists. Around 5000 people turned up during the event, together with people from all walks of life, working hand in hand to deliver the essence and spirit of the day. International Coastal Cleanup Day is celebrated in over 90 countries of the world and manifests itself through a number of different initiatives. But the core of the day is to engage people to remove trash and debris from different beaches and waterways of the world and generate awareness to change detrimental behaviour that causes pollution.
